ABNER BROADWAY

Abner Broadway, son of Nancy and Abner Broadway of South Carolina was born in Montgomery County Alabama about 1830.
He married Mary Stephens and their daughter Elizabeth born 1853 married Josiah Marion McClain while other daughter Rebecca Lou married Clopton Gibson.  Elizabeth later married to John Gardner. Abner's daughter Caroline married James F. Gibson.

Driving down Highway 231 Troy Highway, between Montgomery and Troy, passing by the Warrior Hill Baptist Church on the left and a Rest Area on the right, there is Moore Road and Meriweather Trail on the right.  Gibson Road goes through Grady and enters Dublin which runs right into Ramer and Pine Level, all within a stones throw of each other.  Ramer was home to the First Little White House of the Confederacy and once had a train station that families used to go into the city of Montgomery, but all are located in Montgomery County. Many of these families intermarried, some to their first or second cousins.

Abner came from South Carolina and was married to "Nancy" and it is my belief that she was a Simmons or Timmons, but census records do have terrible, sometimes illegible, handwriting.

Mary has son Elijah and Evan.
 
Being so close and with Abner away from the other Broadways and most of the Broadways did live close together, it is a strong possibility and Mary Simmons is the mother of Nancy Broadway.

Abner bought 40 acres of land in 1837 in Montgomery County Alabama.

His son Abner may have been called Ambros or Abiah and this Abner married Mary L. S. Stephens.  He may also have married secondly to Harriet Stephens.

Sometimes the reference to Mobile, Montgomery, AL might be Mobile Road that ran from Maxwell AFB through Hope Hull and Pine Level into Ramer and it is always listed as Montgomery County.

One might also study the Old Federal Road which came near eastern Montgomery, that the early pioneers traveled in the 1820s, right through Creek Indian Nation, and Line Creek, as well as the Shawnee Village of Augusta Alabama.

    Co., S.C. In 1840, the family is listed in Montgomery Co., Alabama (Page 187),
    and in 1850 the census shows them again in Montgomery Co., Alabama (page 173).

    obtained information on the Abner Broadway (sometimes Broadaway) family from Ron Head of the Montgomery Alabama Genealogical Society, who had researched this family some time ago:
    In the 1830 census, (page 96) he and his family are shown living in Sumter
    Co., S.C. In 1840, the family is listed in Montgomery Co., Alabama (Page 187),
    and in 1850 the census shows them again in Montgomery Co., Alabama (page 173).

    His funeral memorial book information was not written by his wife and his date of birth is wrong. He raised my mother Annie and the book may have been written by her and Katie Bell. Charlie had lazy eye and premature grey, worked at his church and was a farmer and owned livestock. He built caskets during the epidemic.

The land was once owned by John Hill who's son R L Hill was also buried there, beside Peter Edward Bozeman. Cousin Dora explained there were once over 50 tombstones on this very neglected area, which we may yet find, among the weeds, brush, and barbed wire.

    Broadway has been found spelled many different ways and probably due to the census images being so hard to read.

    Hundreds of families from South Carolina moved into Montgomery, probably by wagon trains in the early 1800s.  I am finding many of these families living very close together on the 1840 and 1850 census records and they intermarried.

    Some even married cousins.  The older census records of South Carolina show them all living close together, Broadway, Hodge, Pool, and several other surnames.

    Am still not sure about the middle name of Abner's wife, Mary Stephens, the L could be an S

    1820 Abbeville SC shows William Pool Broadway living next to Mary Pool and his brother Esau is found in Louisiana living next to several Pool families.  William had a brother named Abner and a son named Abner.  Some census transcribers wrote it as Abros because it is not very clear.

    However we find another William Broadway with 9 family members living in Sumter SC in 1820

    These Broadways had served in the American Revolution and had received land grants according to the South Carolina Archives shown on the internet.


    1830 shows Abner living near his father William and brothers George and Lewis in Sumter South Carolina.

    1850 Abner and Nancy Broadway are in Montgomery Alabama but little Abner is not in  this household on this date.

    1860 shows Abner and wife Mary Susan Stephens with daughter Elizabeth Broadway who is the one who later married Josiah Marion McClain.

    Abner's sister Mrs Timmons lives right next door !!  Then we find them in 1870
     
     
      1870 Ramer Census shows a Bob Broadway born 1810 SC so he must be the son of Susan Pack

    1870 James Broadway of SC is also found in Ramer

    1870 Thomas Broadway is from North Carolina so he states and is found in Indian Creek, Bullock County, AL

    the elder Abner born 1713 married Mary Gardener and he was the son of Edward and Mary Pool Broadway. His ancestors came from England to Maryland and into Virginia and most were born in South Carolina after that.

    There is a Broadway in Sumter SC in 1810 but the first initial could be an M.
    In Iredell NC there is a William Broadway and a Samuel who could be brothers.

    In the 1830 census, (page 96) he and his family are shown living in Sumter
    Co., S.C. In 1840, the family is listed in Montgomery Co., Alabama (Page 187),
    and in 1850 the census shows them again in Montgomery Co., Alabama (page 173).
